The Whistle Blower Umpire training nights “It’s Wednesday night as the car pulls up at training just after 6pm at Macpherson Park, the home of the Melton Bloods. The ground is lit up and the ground is in superb condition, one that some wish could be used in the RDFL. Like any other club, you walk into the rooms and kit up in your club tops, lace up the boots while the likes of the Ice Man, Micky B and Browny are having a laugh about something that happened over the weekend. Goal umpire and trainer Billy Connell is often in the trainer’s room massaging the legs of some of those that pulled up sore while others go out on the track at their leisure and do a few warm up laps on their own.
The track is firm under foot as goal umpire Tim Tingiri, rugged up in a beany and jacket seemingly sprints around the track to better his fitness for future marathon runs. Rhodesy calls the field and boundaries in, talks about the night ahead, what happened last weekend and what is ahead for the group in the coming weeks. We head out and do a slow warm up lap, followed by stretches where more often than not, the younger brigade are handpicked by Rhodesy to show us all how to do stretches. After that, we’re often split up into groups of similar fitness abilities and get sent to various stations over the ground, some that simulate match plays while others work on improving sprints and long runs.
Meanwhile, Brian Collins is out on the field talking to the fieldy’s about what games they are doing for the weekend, Ekka is working with some of the new boundaries and the likes of Laurie and Gilesy are getting around and encouraging everyone. When all is said and done, the likes of boundaries’ Troy and Yung Reiwoldt are showing up the fieldy’s with their fitness while Margie and the girls lead the way in other groups.
After about 7.15pm, we all do a warm down lap together and then head into the rooms. The goalies are already in the social rooms, some tucking into a cold beer while Kenny, Billy Connell, Dwayne- o and company do a sensational job with the meals and making sure everyone is looked after. Sometimes Mike will gather all the fieldy’s in the opposition change rooms, hand out diagrams detailing ways to position yourself in a contest or when working in a two and three umpire system. It is an open forum and everyone contributes their thoughts using examples from match day scenarios. It is hard not to get much out of those sessions.
Afterwards,Shillo is checking on all the junior umpires for the weekend, hoping that his whole day spent making arrangements come to fruition with everyone available for those games. Poc and Butters spear head the punters club for the weekend ahead. Both of the Semmo’s are floating around cracking jokes, Lita and Carts kick back and have philosophical talks with everyone that drifts by. The one thing that you notice about this club is that it has a membership base of more than 100 people from all different back grounds, occupations, age and gender. They all enjoy the game and they all work together to make the club a fun place to be around. The latest I’ve left a training night is 10pm and even then, Browny, Gilesy, Poc and others are still having a laugh and don’t look like slowing down. The Riddell Umpires Association, that’s my footy club.”

He was a Mad dog on the field as a player and he is just as much the same as a field umpire and Tony ‘Mad dog’ O’Dwyer wouldn’t have it any either way. After an illustrious football career that spanned two clubs and more than 400 games, Tony has slotted into the field umpire mix as if he was born to be the man in charge. Tony joined the Association after playing Reserves and Thirds football playing on the wing at Hadfield and half forward for Romsey, the latter were he donned the Redback colours for more than 150 games. His achievements as a footballer are quite remarkable having won the ‘Most Determined’ award with Hadsfield four years running, leading goal kicker at the Romsey and coaches award at Romsey while having a run in an Over 42s competition. He has tried his hand at coaching the Hadfield and Airport West Reserves and one wouldn’t put it beyond him if he lined up as a president of a club somewhere down the line. He had his first injury in football last year that now has him sport the orange fluros as an umpire. “I got involved in umpiring because I injured my shoulder playing footy last year,” Tony said, “and as an umpire, you get to be more involved in the game than any player.” The 50 something year old clearly doesn’t show his age on the field as he has an endless supply of grunt and energy to plough through games in the middle effortlessly, as indicated when he ran three consecutive junior games on a mud ridden track at Woodend. “I definitely feel as though I could run another one, bring it on!” Tony said after the third game last Sunday. His hard work on the field transpires with his busy lifestyle off the field where he often works as a truck driver in the day and then as a Casual Inserter for the Herald Sun by night. Many games on Saturday are done on the back of the back of a few hours sleep on Thursday night after working right through Friday night, heading home to get his gear and then straight to the game. This pregame superstition may add more emphasis to his nickname ‘Mad Dog’. Tony is one of the true characters of our great game in the local area. At times, he can be so laid back that he would be in a coma before having throwing out a joke so fast with so much wit that it leaves you bamboozled. His highly contagious laugh brings the fun back into the footy which was evident when he ran out against his old side Romsey in just his second game where he talked about just going out, having a bit of fun and having beers with the boys afterwards. When it comes to umpiring the game in itself, the smile drops and the laugh becomes a mere echo as he takes control of the game with strong authority. “The one thing I’d love to see in the future for umpires in the RDFL is for us to have numbers and our names on the back of our shirts,” Tony said. If the wish comes true, don’t be surprised to hear spectators yelling ‘you’re a Mad Dog’ to Tony on the field as he prepares to launch the ball in the air to start a Grand Final.
